MONZA (14 April, 2019) – Ekris Motorsport is looking back upon a tough start of the GT4 European Series. At the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, the team’s driver’s duo Ricardo van der Ende and Euan McKay did not finish the first race, and finished 6th is the second race in the Silver Class with the Ekris M4 GT4. This result was considerably less than the team had hoped for but given the problems at the start of the weekend, and the fact that they were finally resolved on Saturday, the result of the 2nd race felt like a small victory. “Given all the problems we had, I am extremely proud of the perseverance of our people that ultimately resulted in our first points, and with which we have taken the road up again”, team manager Stian Boers commented.
The season opener at the GP circuit of Monza close to Milan was the first competitive outing with the Ekris M4 GT4 for this season. During the winter period the car was completely rebuilt and optimally prepared for the start of the season. There have also been a number of minor improvements to the car, such as optimized brake cooling. But unfortunately, this did not immediately result in a trouble-free race weekend.
As it became apparent during the practice sessions. Ricardo van der Ende knows the GT4 field, the car and the team from his many years of experience, but Euan McKay found himself in a new environment for his first race participation with Ekris Motorsport. He quickly adapted to the situation and it soon became clear that he is feeling comfortable within the car and the team.
The first race of the weekend took place on Saturday. The Ekris M4 GT4 with starting number 8 had qualified in 20th place, but unfortunately Ricardo van der Ende was not able to bring it to the start, due to technical problems again. Thus, Van der Ende and McKay eventually did not start the race, this was a big disappointment for the whole team after 2 days of working until late at night.
But that didn’t stop the team from searching and eventually tracing the problem. It turned out to be a wire break in the gas cable! This changed the perspective for the second race completely, although we had to start from the 20th starting position, and the rain came pouring down from the sky, Euan McKay took the start of the race and survived the usual turmoil in the opening stages. Thus, he was able to hand over the car undamaged and then, it was up to Ricardo van der Ende to complete the final part of the race after the pit stop and the mandatory driver change. The stalwart did this in a splendid way. In a thrilling stint with some strong duels and overtaking, Van der Ende remained calm and thus drove sixed place in the Silver Cup home.
Ricardo van der Ende: “Fantastic to be able to race again after a long winter break! Of course, my expectations were higher before the start, but given the problems and the enormous efforts of the team, we made the most of the weekend, this is a good basis to build on for the next race at Brands Hatch.”
Euan McKay: “This weekend, I had to deal with many new things, but I am feeling really well at Ekris Motorsport. The championship is really strong, making it challenging to race here. Of course, the results were maybe not as hoped, but I am already looking forward to the next rounds!”
The GT4 European Series continues at the circuit of Brands Hatch in Great Britain, 4 and 5 May.
